Enable Occupational Therapy in Mental Health has been operating in Cairns for over 20 years but recently relocated to Townsville.
To introduce the team and to reach out to local residents, they are hosting two free workshops on Monday 9th May, 2016. The "Thrive Not Just Survive" workshop explores Emotional Energy - the critical factor underpinning motivation, resilience to stress, time management, and generally feeling good about life.
The lack of properly managed emotional energy leads people to become burnt out, depressed and/or to develop a whole range of other stress triggered health issues.
During the workshop you will learn how to understand emotional energy, how to recognise the warning signs indicating depletion and how to apply straightforward strategies to maximise emotional energy levels.

Until recently I truly didn’t understand the dedication, passion and unselfish act that Townsville volunteers provide to the community.
Since I am trying to get back out into the ‘real world’ and meet new people I decided that I would volunteer my time to some of the wonderful activities and organisations that are available around our beautiful city.
Since my daughter is becoming more active and needs a variety of toys to entertain her, I decided to join the Townsville Toy Library. For obvious reasons I found this not-for-profit organisation to be extremely helpful due to the fact they saved me hundreds of dollars because they act like a traditional library, but for TOYS!
You do need to join as a member to hire out the toys, but by volunteering my time at this unique organisation I received a discount on my membership, and more importantly I have met some wonderful people who volunteer their time every week to make sure that this facility is available for every family in the Townsville region.
Another aspect of my life that I am quite passionate about is exercise and getting back to my pre-baby body. I started doing a 12 week challenge with a friend, and during that time I found that I quite enjoyed running 5kms on a Saturday morning. Since I don’t like running alone I registered online for a new initiative called Park Run.
This FREE event relies on volunteers to be the event organiser, time keeper, photographer, marshals, token giver and scanner, and there are also people within the group who are purely there to help encourage other members to get to the finish line. Every week at 7am at either North Shore or Riverway this event is held and it wasn’t until I got injured and couldn’t run, that I realised how much events like these actually relied on these selfless people to give up their time on a Saturday morning to help others reach their goals.
There are so many other organisations, events and opportunities that rely on people within the community to volunteer their time so that they can continue to provide a valuable service to Townsville and I would just like to say to those people that YOU ROCK!
Ronald McDonald House, Surf Life Saving, Clean Up Australia Day, Army Museum at Lavarack Barracks, RSPCA and The Townsville Hospital are just some of the many places around Townsville that rely on volunteers to wash clothes for families with sick children, save lives on our beautiful beaches, clean up rubbish, educate visitors on Townsville’s role in the World Wars or to just take a dog for a walk.
I totally understand that people are time poor due to family and work commitments, but since I have volunteered my time (1-2hrs a month), I have become more aware of the invaluable role that our volunteers play in society to make Townsville one of the best places in the world to live.

Have you ever walked around the markets, picked up an odd looking vegetable or tropical fruit and wondered "What on earth do I do with this? How do I eat it? Do I cook it first?"
Local Dietician, Vivienne Salu, has created a Guided Tour around Cotters Market that will answer those questions, plus offer a wealth of knowledge about the health benefits surrounding fresh produce. Vivienne will share her nutrition and cooking tips while you sample some tropical fruits and delicious treats made from our local produce.
Abandon the impersonal process of picking items from a supermarket shelf and instead meet the local farmers, growers and producers while you explore the selection of fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, eggs, seedlings and plants. Learn about how and where our food is grown - from the people who grow it!
If you have been wanting to grow your own produce then let Vivienne introduce you to the the world of edible plants on sale at the markets and pick the brains of the growers to get inside knowledge on how to get the best start for your seedlings and fruit trees.
The guided tour is on May 1st and goes for one hour. Beginning from the Rotary Tent on the corner of Flinders Street and Stokes Street, there are three start times of 8am, 9am & 10am.
Vivienne plans to offer the Guided Tours as an ongoing event alternating between Cotters Markets and Willows Markets.

Local home based business, Paper & Pans, is a combination of the skills of Bec Anderson, a busy wife and mum of 2.
As many mums know, finding an ideal work from home opportunity can be daunting! When her son was 1, Bec decided to become a stay at home mum and she immediately started thinking about what business opportunities were available that would allow her to work around her family.
Starting her business in 2010, the idea came about due to her passion for making invitations and special occasion stationery and a growing customer base through being a consultant with the Chefs Toolbox – hence the name, Paper & Pans!
After creating her own personalised invitations to cut down her wedding costs, Bec realised that she had quite the talent for making beautiful stationery at an affordable price.
You want your wedding guests to be excited when they receive their invitation in the mail, and by working with Paper & Pans you will have the perfect wedding stationery, including RSVP cards, wishing well notes etc. Bec can tailor a package that suits you.
With the ability to completely customise your stationery to match your theme, Bec will work with you over face to face meetings, via email or phone. Once she has a few of your ideas, Bec then produces samples for your approval. You have complete input into the creative process meaning you get the stationery that YOU want!
Although the Pans side to Bec’s business came about through Chefs Toolbox, recently her focus has changed and over the past year she moved the focus of her business in a new direction.
Being a bit of a superstar in the kitchen when it comes to baking and all things sweet, Bec was delighted when her son’s 1st Birthday cake turned out exactly as she hoped.
What followed was making cakes for friends and family before she realised that cake making was what she truly felt passionate about. Over a couple of years, Bec’s skills have increased and she is constantly learning new techniques and expanding her knowledge in the cake making field.
Her signature design is a beautiful buttercream rosette covered cake. Stunning in it’s simplicity, Bec has perfected this classic design but then goes a step further by adding extras to create an individual cake that is just perfect for your special event.
All cakes from Paper & Pans are made from scratch – no packet mixes here! Sponge cakes, mud cakes, fruit cakes… if it’s cake, Bec will bake it! Bec welcomes cake tasting sessions and can work with you to create a cake that will amaze and delight your guests!
From exquisite personalised invitations to feeding your hungry guests a mouth watering treat, Paper & Pans is your best choice for personalised service and custom made to order, one of kind, products!

Grow Real Estate opened in January 2016 and have since proven themselves to be ahead of the pack when it comes to all things real estate. Particularly Property Management.
“By having a set price for the year, we take the guess work out of this expense for investors. Regardless of what rent per week your property achieves, you will find value in our simplified fees and knowing exactly how much you will be paying each week. There aren’t any surprises, you pay one flat fee each week of the year with no extras.”
Grow Real Estate are not motivated by greed but by performance. Investors work directly with the business owner who has a vested interest in the performance of the property and Kathryn ensures her clients are well looked after.
Many of us have probably been bitten by capped price deals before that then turn out to have lots of hidden extras. But not at Grow Real Estate. When they say capped price, that’s exactly what it is – no more to pay.
There are no extra fees for admin and they take advantage of new technology such as Dropbox, email statements and a web based portal for owners to log in to at any time.
Kathryn says, “We use new technology and we’re constantly updating”
As well as providing superior management of your property, Grow Real Estate are also embracing the opportunities to better support private landlords as a consultancy service. Whether it’s just a one off Letting or having the rent collection taken care of, Kathryn is happy to work with private landlords to find the best solution for them. Even if just a one off routine inspection so there’s a professional eye going over the property, Grow Real Estate believes in empowering and supporting those landlords who choose to manage their own property but wish to access the subscriptions or professional experience Grow can offer.
